For AMKSS, For Team, For Self - We serve
Badminton – referred to by some as ‘The Fastest Racquet Sport in the World’ – requires agility, power, mental and physical prowess as well as endurance. Ang Mo Kio Secondary has made a name for herself in this tough but satisfying sport which hones delicate wrist-work skills, nimble footwork and perseverance.
Team AMKSS trains thrice a week in order to help the students build badminton skills and to train their grit and persistence in getting things right. Our senior school teams have consistently achieved Top 4 placing in the very competitive South Zone Badminton Competitions over the years. One of our alumni, Mr Kelvin Ho, is the national singles coach for players including Loh Kean Yew and Yeo Jia Min.
In 2021 and 2022, our B Division Girls continued our tradition of making our presence felt in this highly competitive arena by coming in third and second places respectively. This year, even though none of the teams made it to Top 4 for zonals, three of our teams at least made it to Top 8. Our team hopes to take the lessons learnt from this season’s competition back to the drawing board and do better in next year’s edition.
Besides pushing boundaries in the sports arena, Team AMKSS also seeks developmental opportunities that enable our student leaders and members to learn and grow through the planning and execution of bonding sessions, friendly matches and VIA programme for primary schools.
This year, our CCA had the privilege to work with Ang Mo Kio Primary School (AMKPS). During one of the VIA sessions, our students played the role of coaches by helping to refine their junior counterparts’ basic skills like lobbing, lifting and pushing and also played friendly matches with them. There was also a sharing session by some of our players to give more insight on the rigours and challenges of Secondary School life. It was a light-hearted moment seeing the students from AMKPS thanking our players for their efforts and taking pictures with them at the end of the VIA session.
We also collaborated with AMKSS 64th Singapore Boys’ Brigade (BB) Company, imparting basic badminton skills by having Inter-CCA VIA sessions together. The BB were fast learners and easy to manage. Through these interactions, the pupils can learn from different age groups, hence it’s a good learning experience for them.
As we look ahead to 2024, our hope is for the Badminton club to continue to grow in strength and unity.
